This paper investigates translator style through an analysis of translational shifts in four Persian translations of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. The detected shifts are classified into a set of categories and sub-categories, allowing for a structured comparison across translators. The study argues that recurrent shift patterns provide a reliable basis for profiling individual translators. The dataset consists of 105 sentences and clauses extracted from the source text and its four Persian translations. The findings indicate distinct stylistic tendencies among the translators: Shahin frequently employs expansion through longer linguistic units; Ashena shows a strong tendency toward domestication through extensive restructuring of source-text elements; Daryabandari, while exhibiting fewer shifts than some translators, still demonstrates a notable preference for expansion by replacement; and Afshar produces the lowest number of shifts overall, maintaining closer adherence to the source text and preserving a stronger authorial presence, which results in a more foreignizing effect.
