Adaptation in cinema serves as a means of recreating narratives and literary texts, and when undertaken in a different cultural context, it functions as cultural transfer, enabling the transmission of concepts, symbols, and semantic structures across societies. This descriptive-analytical study, drawing on Rojo López’s (2002) model rooted in Fillmore’s (1977) Frame Semantics, examines adaptation as an intercultural and intermedial phenomenon. Focusing on J.D. Salinger’s Franny and Zooey and its Iranian film adaptation Pari directed by Dariush Mehrjui, the study explores the representation of cultural frames in the adaptation process. First, cultural frames were identified in the novella, and then corresponding scenes in Pari were analyzed. The findings reveal four strategies employed to represent cultural frames: omission, alteration, addition, and transference. The analysis shows that media constraints in transferring content from text to film, along with culture-based limitations, shaped the selection of these strategies. These insights contribute to understanding how culturally embedded elements of literature can be localized in cinema.
