Towards a Multi-level Model of News Production: with an eye to news production process in Iran

Within linguistic-ethnographic approach, we went to the heart of the newsrooms and observed the way news is shaped and summarized the process into a multilevel model. The researches done yet have focused on analyzing final product (news) than scrutinizing the whole process. In this article, we propose a multilevel model which holistically shows the bottom-up process of news production from selecting the newsworthy event to post publication phase and receiving audience feedback. In order to describe such multidimensional phenomenon, in addition to personal experience of the researcher, as a journalist, a range of research instruments were used from reviewing the relevant literature to on-sight observation of the process in news agencies. We also did semi-structured in-depth interviews with ten highly experienced Iranian journalists to add their voice. Besides proposing a model, we also suggest Grice Cooperative Principle (CP) and its relevant maxims as an implicit factor ruling the composition level.
