Abstract

The present descriptive-analytical study examines the polysemy of the Persian, sensory verb “cheshidan” (to taste) to identify its prototypical and peripheral meanings and its semantic network in the framework of cognitive lexical semantics. A total of 600 instances “cheshidan” were collected from the Persian Language Database, the Ganjoor and various Persian dictionaries in order to determine its prototypical and peripheral meanings. Then, following Ibaratte-Antoñano (1999) and Sweetser (1990), the meanings were classified into 31 semantic categories. The findings revealed that the most frequent meanings were “to taste” (154 occurrences) and “to eat/drink” (112 occurrences), followed by “to experience” (104) and “to perceive” (74). The results showed the presence of a broader semantic network for cheshidan, compared to other Persian, sensory verbs, which was shaped not only by embodiment but also by Persian speakers’ cultural and literary experiences. they confirmed that the semantic expansion of cheshidan in Persian is language-specific and considerably broader than the categories identified by Ibarretxe-Antuñano (1999).
