Abstract

Salam, Matarsak, the second novel by Munir al-Din Beirouti, an innovative and experimental Iranian author, features a distinctive prose style and narrative techniques that necessitate close attention to the ways in which the narrative conveys its underlying themes. The novel depicts the life of a human trapped in a self-constructed whirlpool, in search of self-knowledge. Its central theme concerns the crisis of identity and the tension between reality and illusion in contemporary humans. This study adopts an analytical-descriptive approach to examine the various techniques employed by the author to effectively communicate the novel’s thematic concerns. Additionally, the relationship between the title, the paratextual elements, and the narrative structure is analyzed in connection with the theme. By selecting an appropriate narrative framework, the author establishes a direct link between storytelling and thematic development. Characterization is largely effective; the psychological fragmentation of characters is explored through narrative duality. Throughout the novel, the identity crisis is mirrored by a narrative crisis.
