Abstract

The Arabic dialect of the Khamseh is regarded as a variety of Standard Arabic. The present study investigates word order patterns in the Arabic dialect of the Labu-Mohammadi tribe of the Khamseh (Fars Province) within the framework of Dryer’s (1992) 24 parameters and based on the model proposed by Dabir-moghaddam (2013). The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 30 native speakers and were transcribed in grammatical examples. The aim of this research is to examine word order patterns in the Labu-Mohammadi Arabic dialect and to determine its typological position in comparison with Euro-Asian and other world languages. The findings indicate that, compared to Euro-Asian and world languages, the Labu-Mohammadi dialect exhibits 17 and 19 features, respectively, characteristic of strongly verb-medial languages. Therefore, the dialect tends toward the strongly verb-medial type. This dialect both preserves the linguistic heritage of Arabic and shows the influence of the surrounding Persian-speaking environment.
