Abstract

Meta-discourse markers are important linguistic tools in literary text analysis. This study investigates and compares the use of meta-discourse markers in the novel Klaydar written by Dolatabadi, based on Hyland’s (2005) framework. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the data were analyzed using SPSS 21 and LancsBox6 software for data collection and analysis. The results revealed significant differences in the types and frequencies of meta-discourse markers within Klaydar. The author predominantly utilizes interactive meta-discourse to establish connections between narrative elements and the reader, while interactional meta-discourse plays a complementary role, appearing mainly in sections requiring direct information transfer. This pattern reflects the author’s strategy to adapt the narrative style to the evolving demands of the story at each stage. The findings underscore the crucial role of meta-discourse markers in text organization and author-reader interaction in Klaydar. The meta-discursive pattern demonstrates a purposeful strategy for aligning the narrative style with the story’s needs.
