Abstract

In the realm of critical discourse analysis, discourse is regarded as a social practice through which social relations and subjects are constructed and, in turn, construct reality. This study aims to critically analyze the representation of social actors in the debate poems of Parvin E'tesami. Six such poems were examined using van Leeuwen's (2008) socio-semantic framework. After extracting the debate poems, discourse-oriented components of van Leeuwen—inclusion and exclusion—were identified and quantified in the verses exchanged between the debaters. The findings revealed that Parvin E'tesami most frequently employed explicit representational strategies, such as multinomial specification, activation, and categorization, to depict social actors. From a critical perspective, the symbolic characters in these debates correspond to the emerging social actors of Parvin E'tesami's contemporary era. Furthermore, unlike conventional approaches that often focus on aesthetic or content-based analysis of poetry, this study seeks to investigate the representation of social actors, power relations, roles, and ideology in the works of this prominent poet.
