Investigating the Speech Acts of "Oathing / Swearing" in Persian Based on Cultural Linguistics

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out how many types of cultural schemas of swearing included in Persian language and what motivates their widespread use. The data collected from the common speech .The data analysis showed Iranian culture, as an indirect society,, considers the politeness strategies, It uses different schemas as regret, doubt, denial, advice, compliment, invitation, and threat. The use of "swearing" with commissive, declarative and persuasive actions is associated with various schemas in the context; "make some one swear" found only with persuasive action. A study of cultural factors revealed the position of swearing in Persian has changed from the past to the present and has become a part of common everyday interactions. The excessive use of swearing indicates distrust among Persian speakers and individuals engage in this behavior to gain the trust of their audience. Extereme use of this behavior in today's Iranian culture reflects a combination of history, religion, and social and psychological factors.
