Studying the suffixes of Persian inflectional morphemes -tar and -tarin in the speech of Azerbaijani-Persian bilinguals

Abstract

The data of this study consist of words ending in -tar and -tarin, collected from conversation speech of Azerbaijani-Persian bilinguals in central regions of Ardabil province. Frequency of data in the speech of bilinguals was determined. Then, the data were analyzed in field of morphological borrowing. The suffixes of Persian morphemes -tar and -tarin in the speech of Azerbaijani-Persian bilinguals and incorporation of these inflectional endings into native Azerbaijani words indicate that more advanced stages of language transfer have taken place;Therefore, Persian inflectional endings -tar and -tarin in the speech and language of Azerbaijani-Persian bilinguals, function as code-switched structures and have not yet fully incorporated into Azerbaijani. Incorporation of Persian -tar and -tarin in the speech of Azerbaijani-Persian bilinguals is classified as a combined transfer. Because Azerbaijani-Persian bilinguals have transferred not only the phonetic form of -tar and -tarin morphemes, but also their morphological pattern to their speech and language.
