Abstract

This research examines three phonological processes of deletion, assimilation, and insertion of the vowel /ɛ/ between word-final clusters in Kurdish dialect of Sonqoɾ-u-Koljɑee. The theoretical framework of the research is “generative phonology” and is focused on CVC₁C₂ syllable structure with the second element /ɾ/ or /ɫ/, in which, in order to the Sonority Sequencing Principle, inserting /ɛ/ breaks the consonant cluster. The data was collected by interviews with 15 female and male, illiterate and literate informants, in different age groups from 30 to 60 years old as well as written sources. The author is also a native informant of this Kurdish dialect. The findings show changing sequences such as /nb/ → [mb] and /ng/ → [ŋg], in regressive assimilation, and then, the consonant /g/ in [ŋg] and in some cases /b/ in [mb] is deleted. These processes represent the interaction of the Sonority Principle and phonological structure in this dialect.
