Abstract

The present study examines unmarked and marked themes usage in academic texts by Iranian and non-‎Iranian authors. The research method is descriptive-analytical and the statistical population is835 clauses which ‎were counted based on Systemic Theory then the texts ‎were compared with each other in terms of genre, author, and corpus.Based on the results the ‎number of unmarked themes used was77% and74%, and that of marked themes was23% and ‎‎26% in ESP and EGP respectively. It shows that their usage did not differ significantly. This ‎similarity could be related to the co-genre of the texts and and has nothing to do with the specific ‎characteristics of the books or the cultural subject of the authors. The configuration of the ‎given texts is consistent with the Systematic view and confirms the necessity of it’s suggested structural options in ‎writing the scientific texts. At last, different frequency of themes may also be justified by the writers' prioritization and ‎arrangement of materials, each of which pursues a specific purpose and style.‎
