Abstract

The present study investigates the spelling problems of Persian-speaking dyslexic children. This study is based on Coltheart’s Dual Route Model (1978) and the Waterfall Dual Route Model, presented by Coltheart et al. (1993) and Coltheart and Russell (1994). The study population includes 20 normal males and 10 dyslexic children in the third and fourth grades of elementary school. The data collection method includes preparing and setting the tests, administering them, and recording the written samples of the observed subjects. The findings of this study showed that spelling performance in two groups of normal and dyslexic children is affected by the variable of transparency and phonological awareness, and dyslexic children perform worse in spelling than normal children. Both normal and dyslexic children not only performed better in spelling transparent words than opaque ones, but also had the weakest performance in the initial phoneme detection Key Words: developmental dyslexia, phonological awareness, Persian language, orthography transparency test.
