Abstract

In present research, the Ezafe construction in Farsi is investigated based on Halliday’s viewpoint on systemic functional grammar. In this article, it is indicated that the semantic relation of the head and dependent is diverse and the semantic categorization is not necessarily in parallel with traditional classifications. Also, the Ezafe construction in Farsi is introduced as the degraded form of a clause which is usually a relational one. In relational clauses, the participants and their relation matter. In present article, the semantic relations of head and dependent are grouped as: possession, assignment, access, part, type, substance, purpose, quality, circumstance, identity and process. The last type of this construction is also down ranked form of a clause, but the process involved in this type is non-relational and can be material, behavioral, mental etc. it is also debated that, this last type of clause is downranked to Ezafe construction by grammatical metaphor.
